As a register of individuals, manufactures, companies, societies or the authorities, address books serve the same purpose as nowadays the white pages. To genealogists or historians address books are an important means to trace a person's life within a community, as during the 19th century address books are compensating for the not yet existing administrative registers. A very interesting source are the various lists of civil institutions given within these address books, as well as overviews on enterprises and the advertisements attached are providing a wonderful basis for economic or historical research, considering that all these registers of societies, associations, organisations, religious groups, welfare groups or sport clubs often are the only indication of their existence or of those engaged in them.
